How do polyurethane tires make forklift trucks more efficient?

Polyurethane has a lower rolling resistance than rubber, which minimizes wasted energy as the tire rolls, and improves battery life.


Why does polyurethane last longer than rubber in caster wheels?

As rubber tires are used, they lose fragments of the tread because of surface conditions and general abrasion. Polyurethane does not experience similar wear due to its overall toughness. Polyurethanes tend to excel under sliding abrasion while rubber performs less effectively. As a general rule polyurethane wheels will outlast rubber wheels by about four times.


How do polyurethane tires perform when they run over a sharp object?

Due to its overall toughness, the polyurethane tire will withstand sharp objects and debris, especially when compared to rubber. Once torn or cut, rubber tires tend to propagate the tear area. Polyurethane is resistant to both cutting and tearing.  In fact, debris that would normally wreck a rubber tire will become imbedded in the polyurethane tread.


Why choose polyurethane over metal in my industrial application?

Polyurethane offers significant advantages over metal. It is lighter in weight, it generates far less noise, and it typically outlasts and outperforms metal. In fact, polyurethane components have been known to outwear metal parts, lasting up to three times longer in some applications. Polyurethane can also be easily cast in inexpensive tooling whereas the manufacture of metal parts requires costly welding and machining.

Why are polyurethanes well suited for the mining industry?

In mining applications where equipment will process rocks, coal, metals and gravel on a daily basis, polyurethanes are in their element. Naturally tough, durable materials, polyurethanes offer advantages, such as excellent abrasion resistance, impact and tear strength, chemical resistance, tear/flex resistance and elasticity.


Are the polyurethanes in mining cables naturally flame retardant?

No, flame-retardants are chemicals added to thermoplastics to inhibit or resist the spread of fire. Fire-resistant compounds can either be physically mixed with the base material or chemically bonded to it.

How does injection-molding work with polyurethanes?

Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers are supplied as granules or pellets for processing. In the injection molding process, the components are constituted in the pellet and they are then melted together and injected into a mold. This process takes around five minutes. The TPU is constituted so that it can be melted and reformed.
